ХАДІ-5

The History of Creation

The car was created in 1964-1966 according to the drawings of the previous model, «KhADI-4», and had only some slight differences (less powerful and heavy engine and a more lightweight body). The design was based on the spar frame of the pipe diameter of 90 mm, and the front part also served as cooling system lines (the radiator was positioned in the front), and the rear part served as an oil tank. Initially, «KhADI-5» was designed for the use of two classes of engines: Class 7 (2000 cm³) and Class 8        (3000 cm³).

Some original structural elements, in the design of: «KhADI-Kharkov-6», «KhADI-4», «KhADI-5»  and other racing cars, were pioneered in the USSR:

– cylinder head components with spherical compression chambers, four drop valves and two sparking plugs in each cylinder;

– increased degree of compression (up to 8.83) when using methanol as a fuel;

– rotary engine supercharging;

– fuel injection;

– valve timing expansion with larger valve overlapping for intensified cylinder draining, cleaning and cooling;

– dual carburetor powering;

– dry-sump circulation lubrication for all parts of the engine, castor oil greasing;

– use of tube frame cavities as the tanks for cooling water and motor oil;

– installation of a reducer with change gear wheels for changing the final drive gear ratio depending on ride conditions;

– differential blocking;

– selection of the most streamlined bodies according to the results of wind-tunnel investigation;

– metals replaced with fiber-reinforced plastic in car bodies for reducing their weight and facilitation of complex parts production.
