The History of Creation
«KhADI-9» is a jet record setting car, designed and built in the LRC of KhADI in cooperation with Kharkov Aviation Institute and Kharkov Art and Industry Institute. The aim of the project was to set up the absolute world speed record on land while overcoming the sound barrier; the design speed of «KhADI-9» was put as equal to 1200 km/h. The collective diploma project of students from KhADI (S. Sherstobitov, A. Zagovora, V. Segodin, A. Korlyakov, A. Pudrik) was used as a basis of the design. B. V. Reshetnikov, the Rector of the Institute, was the supervisor of the project. V. K. Nikitin and his assistant A. M. Siryatsky were considered to be the soul of this unusual and complex project.
«KhADI-9» is similar in appearance to a giant arrowhead or a wingless plane. The engine is turbojet «RD-9BF», rod is 3.8 t in afterburner, the weight of the car is 2500 kg; the frame is a space one, pipe, fabricated – one-piece, integrated with a fiberglass body. The car had a three-point support with two dual wheels at the front and straddling gauge of rear wheels up to 3600 mm. Wheels in initial tests were on rubber tyres, and in final version they were on metal disks.
It was equipped with electric, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems. The steering drive was hydraulic with a gear ratio of 1:90. Braking was carried out by flaps, air brakes on wheels, and a parachute with electrofluidic control.
