Brief History

The Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Hydraulics, as well as other major departments, was founded in 1930 at the same time as the Institute was founded. In 2015, it also celebrated its 85th anniversary.

About 1,000 students study annually at the department in different educational fields. It provides the students with the theoretical foundations for the study of technical disciplines.

The year 1930 was the beginning of Kharkiv Automobile and Highway Institute, Kharkiv Civil Engineering Institute, Kharkiv Aviation Institute and others whose ancestor was Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, at that time − Kharkiv Institute of Technology. At that time, the departments of theoretical mechanics were organized in these institutes, they were created with the participation and on the basis of the similarly-named department of Kharkiv Institute of Technology which was headed by Prof. I. Babakov.

Then, well-known scientists A. Volmir, Ya. Geronimus, V. Maisel, A. Spengler, A. Syrokomskyi, Z. Kibalchich were invited to teach at the Department of Theoretical Mechanics of Kharkiv Automobile and Highway Institute.

The Department of Theoretical Mechanics of Kharkiv Automobile and Highway Institute was originally headed by Associate Professor D. Rayskyi, in the pre-war decades the Department was headed by Professors B. Rymarenko, V. Maisel, I. Babakov − the well-known scientist in the field of oscillation theory, the founder of the similar department at Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute.
